Today’s lunch was simple, chawli (black eyed beans) and chawal.
I actually made fresh hot chawal in the morning, warmed up the chawli, mixed them 2 together and packed it in the thermos. Strangely chawli is one of the things my son really likes. Strange isn’t it? I also love this lunch specially because I love the way it sounds “chawli chawal”. 🙂
To this lunch I added some baby carrots and a small apple. We’ll see how it does. Sorry folks, no pic today.
So how did it do? Only half of the food was eaten. Not good I think. I give it 2 stars.

Since yesterday’s lunch did not do well, I asked my son today what he wanted for lunch. To my surprise he said roti. I was totally expecting to hear peanut butter jelly sandwich or something like that.
Last night we had chicken and aloo curry, so I warmed that up really well and packed it in a thermos. I made a couple of rotis in the morning to go along with it. I also added one small banana and a yogurt stick. (I love these things!). Nothing fancy, but I hope it gets eaten. I really need to plan on next week’s lunches. 🙂
So how did it go? Only the banana came back. Rest of it was gone. It was a good day. 4stars.

Back to school after the break and we are back at the morning routine of
packing lunches. For today’s lunch I sauteed rice with corn, chole (boiled garbanzo beans) and some masalas. To this I added some mini papads. For the fruit part I cut some fresh strawberries. I also added a tiny piece of chocolate cake. Not sure how this lunch will do after the spring break – we’ll see.
So how did it do? This one didn’t do well at all. Can you guess what got eaten? Papad, strawberries and cake was all gone. But the rice was hardly touched. I would say 2-3 bites. Sad. 2 stars.

Today is another hot lunch day. I had cooked chole last night. This is a very different way of cooking chole, its not the typical way that you get in Indian restaurants. I actually made a simple kadi (out of besan like sindhi kadi), and instead of adding vegetables to it, i added chole. So its kind of like chole kadi. It tastes really yummy. I bet you could even put chole in dahi kadi and make it that way. I mixed the rice and kadi, and packed it in the thermos. I aslo cooked one hot roti in the morning and packed that. To this I added one small carrot pack. I actually even added a small yogurt stick after I clicked the picture. We’ll have to see how much comes back.
So how did it go? The carrots were untouched. (why did I know that would happen? :)) The roti was gone and some of the chawal came back. Overall 3 stars.

Today was another lunch from last night’s leftover dinner. More often than not Monday nights is usually dal chawal for us. Today I made yellow moong dal.
I warmed up the dal and rice really well and packed in a thermos. No picture today, sorry. My son requested an extra scoop of ghee on top and that’s what he got. Dal chawal with extra ghee on top! 🙂 Hopefully he eats it!
So how did it do? This one did really well. Only very little dal chawal came back. Another 5 stars.

Today I packed some Dal. This dal is
actually a mixture of 3 dals i.e. green moong dal, mysoore dal and chana dal.Its cooked a little thick and is tempered with dried red chilli and garlic. It tastes specially good with roti. I made a couple of hot rotis in the morning. To this I added some veggie sticks (Trader Joes) and 2 bite sized chocolate wafer cookies. We’ll see how this one fares.
So how did it do? A little bit of roti and dal was remaining. The cookies went untouched. An extra star for that! 4 stars.Â

Today is another simple-to-make lunch. I made
some dosas in the morning. Instead of eating dosa with chutney or sambar my son likes it with ketchup. So that’s what he got. Dosa and ketchup. I also baked some sweet potato fries. These really do taste so yummy. You should try them if you can. For the fresh fruit I added some strawberries. We’ll see how much of this lunch comes back.
So how did it do? Some of the dosa and some of the sweet potato was left. All of the strawberries were gone. Overall I think 3 stars.

Today is another one of those Pizza lunches at school. They have this at least 2 times a month. I had a relaxed morning. 🙂

Today’s lunch is simple but healthy.
I made a peanut butter jelly sandwich. To this I added a boiled egg. I removed the egg yolk, cut it into small pieces and sprinkled salt and pepper on top. I also chopped a couple of strawberries. For a little treat I added 2 small bite sized wafer cookies.
It looks good to me, hopefully it appeals to my son as well. 🙂
So how did it do? For some reason this didn’t do well at all. Half of the sandwich came back, half of the strawberries came back and the egg and cookie went untouched. How sad. 2 stars.
